Even with the time spent in the bookstore, it was still early for lunch, so the five of them visited a handful of other shops and storefronts. While walking down one corridor, Katie noted a sign in a window advertising “60%-70% off all swimwear.”

“Ooh, swimsuits are on sale!” Katie exclaimed in delight. “Let’s go see what they have!”

Evan groaned. “Why are you looking at swimsuits? Summer is over. You’re not going to go swimming again until next year.”

“Exactly. That’s why they’re on sale. They’re going to be super cheap!” Katie was glowing. “C’mon, Ellie, let’s see if they have anything in your size.”

Ellie beamed at Katie, and while holding hands, they plunged into the store, heading directly toward the racks of discounted swimwear. The rest of them followed, amused at Katie and Ellie’s childishness. He guessed it was a surrogate sister kind of thing—even though Katie was an only child; she had always been like a big sister to Ellie.

Evan reluctantly tagged along, growing a little anxious. Ellie had reached that age when she no longer wanted the cute, childish clothing and frequently asked for more adult styles. Evan still struggled with the idea of his little sister growing up and was determined not to get dragged into this fiasco. The only thing that could be worse than watching his little sister parade a bunch of revealing swimwear in front of him is if they forced him to go underwear shopping. Luckily, his aunt always made those trips with her.

“You don’t like swimsuits?” Hana asked as they approached the swimwear section.

“I like swimsuits just fine,” Evan said. “I just don’t want to see my little sister in something revealing, that’s all.”

“So, what do you consider to be revealing?” she asked. “Something like this?” She picked a blue and white bikini from a nearby rack, holding it up to her as if she were wearing it.

At her invitation, Evan took an admiring look at Hana’s figure, easily imagining how she would look in it. As he pictured her in the swimsuit, he blushed wildly, finally turning his head away in embarrassment.

“Yeah, something like that,” he mumbled.

While looking away, Evan spotted something that made his stomach drop. Walking into the store at that exact moment were Oliver and his cousin Mike, laughing loudly as they walked past the various displays near the entrance.

Evan’s mood swung rapidly from amusement to annoyance. He quickly scanned for the others and found himself alone with Hana—the other three having disappeared, likely into the nearby fitting rooms.

Evan could easily imagine Oliver’s reaction if he saw him with Hana in the girl’s swimsuit section and the teasing that would ensue. That would be bad enough on its own, but with Mike accompanying, there was sure to be a scene.

“Quick!” He grabbed Hana’s hand and pulled her toward the changing booths, keeping his head down. “This way!”

They moved through the racks of swimsuits and into the fitting rooms, Evan pulling Hana into the nearest changing booth before drawing the fabric curtain closed.
